Comida empalagosa en inglés

Judit Godall 14 respuestas
Hi there everyone! A student was sharing his NY trip to me and I asked what the food was like, he gave an example of the doughnut in there was more " empalagoso" than in here (Spain). Empalagoso means when a type of food makes you feel full easily either because it is too sweet, or the ingredients are intense and hard to digest. I found "cloying" in wordreference, but I wonder if you guys use a different one. Thank youuu in advance! Judit

Hi, Judit! I would say sickly sweet. I think is the best way to describe something "empalagoso", as we native speakers use it when something is really, really sweet. Hope this helps!

Hi Judit, As a native American English speaker and teacher, I would use "sugary" or "overly sweet" , "unbearingly sweet" or just "too sweet".

Hi Judit, In American English, "cloying" is indeed a good word to describe food that is excessively sweet or rich to the point of being unpleasant. However, other terms are commonly used as well: 1. Overly sweet: This is a straightforward way to say that something is too sweet. 2. Overrich: Emphasizes that the food is excessively rich and intense in flavor or ingredients. 3. Sickly sweet: Emphasizes that the sweetness is so strong it could make someone feel sick. 4. Heavy: Can refer to foods that are rich or hard to digest, not just in terms of sweetness but also in fat content. Hope this helps!
